A number of community groups have received a financial boost for their work in supporting vulnerable members of the local population throughout the pandemic.

Twelve groups were acknowledged at Tuesday’s Council meeting and thanked for their important work which has involved everything from providing food and a safe-haven including emergency shelter to those struggling.

It was also confirmed that the organisations will each receive $500 from the 2021-22 Mayoral Discretionary Budget which is in place to support the Burwood community.

Mayor John Faker said it was important that Council continues to support community groups where possible.

“The ongoing pandemic has posed significant issues for our community as a result of the tough economic conditions,” Cr Faker said.

“Our seniors, multicultural community, and our youth including those living with a disability have been disproportionately impacted. It’s a sad reality that despite our best efforts Council programs can’t reach everyone.

“There has been a fantastic response from all of our community to offer support and to look each other from the first days of the pandemic. It was difficult to select but these recipient have a long history of supporting our most vulnerable through acts of charity and I feel that it is incredibly important that we support them how ever we can,” Cr Faker concluded.
