Burwood Urban Street Art Wall
Introduction
Burwood’s laneways are set to ignite with colour, creativity, and culture through the first ever urban street art wall in Burwood, a bold initiative transforming Clarendon Place in the heart of Burwood Chinatown, into a dynamic outdoor gallery. This is made possible through the Burwood Urban Street Art Program, which is now inviting pre-selected artists to complete a pre-determined section of a currently blank wall in Clarendon Place into a public masterpiece.
8 artists will be selected to bring the wall to life as part of a Street Art Battle across two days, Saturday 28 to Sunday 29 March 2026. The winner of the Street Art Battle will be determined by the viewing public, who will be encouraged to come and watch the artworks come to life.
To make participation in the program as quick and seamless as possible, artists only need to submit a simple concept description and a portfolio link, letting their work speak for itself.
The Burwood Urban Street Art Wall is more than just a space for murals, it’s a celebration of artistic expression, community engagement, and public placemaking, evolving each season into a powerful reflection of Burwood’s creative identity.

Who can apply to paint a mural on the Street Art Wall?
The program is open to artists aged 18 years and over, including individuals and groups.
Artists under 18 can also participate with parent/guardian consent and must be accompanied during the event.
Applications must include:

What are the artist responsibilities and safety requirements?
Artists must:

Provide their own materials (e.g., paint, brushes).

Complete their mural within the two-day allocated timeframe.

Wear mandatory PPE (closed-toe shoes, gloves, and eye protection if spraying).

Follow Council’s risk management protocols, including safe material handling, staying within work zones, and no use of hazardous substances.

Monitor weather conditions and stop work during severe weather.

Keep their area clean during and after painting.

Hold valid public liability insurance and provide proof during the EOI process.
What is Council responsible for?
Burwood Council will:

Prepare the wall in advance (cleaning, grid marking, traffic management).

Coordinate access to the wall and supervise installations.

Ensure on-site safety and provide emergency contact details during the event.

Manage artist selection, event promotion, and public voting for the Art Battle.

Monitor compliance with guidelines and address any safety or community concerns.
What happens if an artist doesn’t follow the program rules?
If artists fail to comply with guidelines or safety protocols, Council may:

Halt the artist’s participation.

Remove or modify non-compliant artwork.

Exclude the artist from future programs.

Take further action if necessary to ensure public safety and community standards.
Artists must report any incidents, accidents, or damage immediately to Council.
How does the public get involved?
The public is invited to watch the artists paint live at the Burwood Urban Street Art Battle on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 March 2026.
Community members will vote for their favourite mural at the conclusion of the Street Art Battle, helping determine the program winner.
Public feedback is welcomed to ensure the artwork aligns with community expectations.
Winning artists may receive recognition and future collaboration opportunities with Council.
