Probity around gifts and benefits management is one of the central themes of good governance in the public sector. Citizens rightly expect council officials to operate with the highest standards of integrity and impartiality.
The giving of gifts to council officials is not encouraged because it can give rise to conflicts between personal interests and public duty. Where such offers are made, details about the offers and how they are handled are proactively placed on the public record as a matter of transparency.
A mandate for the Gift Register information is contained in the Gifts and Benefits Policy of Council. That Policy is an important supplement to the Burwood Council Code of Conduct.
