Planning for the Burwood North Precinct

Background

In November 2016, the NSW Government released the Parramatta Road Corridor Urban Transformation Strategy (PRCUTS). This strategy aims to renew Parramatta Road and adjacent communities through creating opportunities for homes, jobs, transport, open space and better public amenity. It represents significant urban renewal opportunities for land within the defined development precincts over a 30-year period.

Burwood North is a key precinct within the PRCUTS area.

Since the release of the original PRCUTS vision, the NSW Government has announced Sydney Metro West, with a station in the Burwood North Precinct. With construction underway and the new station anticipated to open in 2030, the metro will significantly improve available public transport infrastructure to support the creation of a vibrant and sustainable community at Burwood North. Although some background work has already been undertaken, the PRCUTS Implementation Plan requires Council prepare a robust evidence base to support a future planning framework at Burwood North.

A transport study of the Parramatta Road corridor across Burwood, Canada Bay and Strathfield local government areas has now been completed. The NSW Government required this study to be completed before councils commenced master planning precincts like Burwood North.

A new masterplan

A multi-disciplinary consultant team has been appointed to prepare the Burwood North masterplan and work has commenced. The masterplan will provide a thorough and tested evidence base which informs the delivery of the planning framework and will consider a diverse range of planning, economic, social, design and environmental challenges.

When completed the masterplan will provide a clear vision and urban design framework for future growth in the precinct including addressing how a high standard of liveability for Burwood North will be achieved.

We value your feedback

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 1st Stage Community Engagement for planning for the Burwood North Precinct. This focused on the proposed principles to guide the future desired character of the Burwood North Precinct and is important information to inform early planning investigation work.

Broadly, this feedback suggested that the community support a vibrant, fine grain centre that is active and walkable. It has a high quality public domain and building heights similar to the Burwood Town Centre.

How can you have your say?

Engaging with the community is a key component of this project and will commence in November 2022. Information regarding the Burwood North masterplan will be communicated regularly. A range of engagement activities will be undertaken, including face to face, drop in sessions and online consultation.

Following completion of engagement activities, a close the loop report will be published on our website. This report will summarise the methods of engagement, along with a summary of the feedback.

Where can you find more information?

The best place to stay up to date on what is happening and how to be involved is the Burwood North Precinct project page.

Probity

We have engaged an independent probity advisor to provide oversight. The probity plan will ensure that a rigorous governance framework and transparent processes are applied to the project. A copy of the Probity Plan will be published on the project page when finalised.
