Sandakan Remembrance Service 2024

Since 1993, Burwood Council and the Sandakan Community Educational Committee have proudly hosted the Sandakan Remembrance Service to remember more than 2,400 servicemen who tragically died at Sandakan and Ranau in Borneo at the end of World War II, 23 of which coming from our Burwood community.

Thank you to those involved in this year's service, including Mr Jason Yat-sen Li MP, the Sandakan Community Education Committee, Ms Sally Sitou MP, local schools and the Defence Force. A special thanks to Assistant Minister for Immigration The Hon. Matt Thistlethwaite MP for delivering a special key note address, and to Dr Roy Beveridge, the grandson of Corporal Barney Allen Fletcher who died at Sandakan.

It’s important to remember the 23 members of our local community who never made it home and ensure their story and the legacy of Sandakan is never forgotten.
