Council’s vision for a civic and cultural precinct like no other is a step closer to reality with the Development Application lodged for a multimillion dollar Urban Park, Arts and Cultural Centre in the heart of Burwood.

It’s a key step on a journey towards creating a pioneering place that will become a destination for arts, culture and community life in the heart of Sydney, and cement Burwood’s position as a vibrant and cosmopolitan strategic centre built around people.

Plans for the Urban Park, Arts and Cultural Centre have been in the pipeline for several years in response to continuing population growth and the changing needs of Burwood’s diverse community and the broader region.

Project highlights include:

  • A new arts and cultural centre, including dedicated performance and rehearsal spaces, studio space, community lounge, flexible multipurpose spaces and café.
  • A new urban park including a public plaza, sloping green lawn area, trees, landscaping, interactive water play features and public art.
  • An underground public car park.

Mayor John Faker is excited about the project seeing it as a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the community.

"It’s always been a vision of mine to create a special place where our communities can come together to celebrate arts and culture,” Cr Faker said.

“This project is one of the most ambitious undertakings Council has ever taken, and will deliver enormous benefits to everyone in our community.”

During the concept design phase, Council engaged hundreds of community members in the design process in 2021. The next step in this process will be Council’s upcoming in-person drop-in sessions.

“We want to ensure we maintain ongoing communication with our community through every stage of the project. So I encourage our local residents to keep informed of key project milestones through Council’s different engagement methods.

“This is an exciting time for Burwood. The Urban Park Arts and Cultural Centre will ensure Burwood continues to be the best place to live, work and visit for generations to come,” Cr Faker said.
