What is National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week is held each year from 27 May to 3 June and is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to reflect on how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in all aspects of life.

The dates commemorate two significant milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey: the 1967 Referendum (27^th May 1967) and the High Court’s Mabo decision (3 June 1992). The week is important because it encourages respectful relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the wider community, promotes truth telling about our history, and supports collective action towards equity, inclusion and recognition. It provides an opportunity for communities, organisations and individuals to come together, acknowledge past injustices and work towards a more unified future.

 

This year’s theme: All In

The theme “All In” is a call to action, asking for everyone to play a part in the reconciliation journey. It emphasises that meaningful progress requires the commitment of all Australians, whether as individuals, organisations or communities. Being “All In” means actively listening, learning and taking action to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, their cultures and their aspirations. It encourages people to move beyond awareness and into practical steps, such as building respectful partnerships, challenging discrimination and creating inclusive spaces where First Nations voices are heard and valued. The theme highlights that reconciliation is not the responsibility of a few, but a shared national effort that benefits everyone.

 

What's On In Burwood For National Reconciliation Week? 

For National Reconciliation Week, we are kicking things off with another Intercultural Exchange. This one will be between a Filipino group and our First Nations community, celebrating shared culture and connections.

These exchanges include storytelling, performance, cultural sharing over a shared cultural meal, creating space for connection, respect and learning. These gatherings help build a deeper understanding between Aboriginal and culturally diverse communities in Burwood.

Burwood Park Pavilion and Amenity Public Art

Burwood Council invited Expressions of Interest from First Nations artists to create a significant public art mural for the Burwood Park Pavilion, celebrating Wangal Country through stories, history, nature and culture of the Wangal people.

Following a strong response, artist Tina Herczeg has been commissioned to bring this vision to life. The mural will be installed from 21 to 28 May, with completion within the start of Reconciliation Week.

A video featuring the artist will also be shared on our website, offering insight into the creative process, design and cultural significance of the work.

Come Visit Burwood Library 

To celebrate Reconciliation Week, the library will feature displays for both junior and adult readers, along with games and puzzles in the children’s area for families to enjoy together.

Come visit our library at 2 Conder Street, Burwood, to explore these special collections, take part in hands on activities, and learn more about the histories, cultures, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Whether you are dropping in for a quiet read or bringing the family along for some fun, there is something for everyone to discover and enjoy.
