Our Commitment to Reconciliation
Burwood Council is committed to improving reconciliation and strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the wider community. Our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) sets out the practical steps we are taking within this journey which are grounded in respect, partnership, and shared learning.
What is a Reconciliation Action Plan?
A RAP is a strategic framework that supports organisations across Australia to contribute to reconciliation in meaningful and measurable ways.
They provide practical and actionable steps to:
- Build respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples within the community.
- Create opportunities for cultural learning and awareness.
- Promote equity and inclusion in Council, local employment, and communities.
- Support self-determination and community outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
RAPs are developed in consultation with the local community and are tailored to reflect the organisation’s role, responsibilities and sphere of influence.
How Burwood Council uses its RAP
Council has applied a ‘Reflect RAP’, which focuses on learning, engagement and establishing a strong foundation for future action. We use this RAP to embed reconciliation across everyday operations, ensuring it informs planning, decision making and service delivery.
By setting clear actions and tracking progress, the RAP ensures accountability and continuous improvement, resulting in relationships, respect, and opportunities.
