Artist statement: 

Drez’s Dual Chromatic Oscillation for the Railway Parade project continues his ongoing Chromatic Oscillation series, exploring the

dynamic relationship between colour, movement, and visual rhythm. Responding to Railway Parade as a corridor of constant transit, the work reflects the intersecting flows of trains, vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians that move through the area each day.

The artwork is composed of two horizontal colour gradients that respond directly to the physical separation within the structure. Running parallel to one another, these bands of colour reference the split paths and alternating directions that characterise contemporary transport networks—from opposing traffic lanes and railway tracks to the overlapping movement patterns of people travelling through the precinct. The dual gradients establish a visual rhythm across the surface, reinforcing themes of motion, exchange, and connection.

Using a palette of warm tones, the work creates a continuous chromatic transition that shifts across the grates through layered changes in hue. As viewers move past the artwork, the colours visually merge and separate, producing an optical sensation of movement that changes according to speed, direction, and perspective. The structure becomes an active visual experience, animated by the movement of its audience and the surrounding environment.
 
The warm palette also creates a visual relationship with Drez’s nearby public artwork Chromatic Pulse at the Burwood Telstra Exchange, extending a shared chromatic language across multiple sites within Burwood. Together, the works contribute to a broader dialogue about colour, place, and movement within the public realm.
