ReSmart Program

Burwood Council works to keep materials in use and out of landfill as much as possible. As part of this, we have partnered with ReSmart (formerly RecycleSmart), a service that collects hard-to-recycle items from your doorstep, keeping them out of landfill through reusing, repairing, donating, repurposing, or turning them into energy.

ReSmart is a Council-subsidised service for Burwood residents, which means there is no cost to use it. Council pays for up to 500 bags each month across the whole LGA, available on a first come, first served basis, so it pays to book early.

Popular items include soft plastics, clothes, shoes, electronics, coffee pods, kitchenware, and more. For details about what can be collected and how the service works, visit what items ReSmart collects.

How to book your free ReSmart pickup

1. Download the ReSmart app or book online at the ReSmart website.
2. Select On-demand Pickup and choose the Regular size.
3. Pick a date that shows "Council-subsidised Pickup" to get your free collection. If that date doesn't suit you, you can book another available time for $19 (up to 60L / 2 bags).
4. You'll be asked to add your credit card details when booking, but you'll only be charged if you don't cancel or reschedule before 4pm the day before. This helps keep the service fair for everyone. When a booked pickup isn't used, another resident misses out and a driver makes an unnecessary trip.
5. Pack your items and use any two shopping bags (around 40x30x20cm each) or a box up to 60L. Fill them with dry, reasonably clean items such as soft plastics, e-waste, textiles, blister packs, and more. A good rule of thumb: if it doesn't go in your regular bins and it's dry, pop it in.
6. Put your bags out and place them outside your home or near your building's letterboxes before 8am on your pickup day.

Your local ReSmart driver will collect your items and make sure they're recycled, reused, or repurposed. If your bags are reusable, your driver will leave them back for you. ReSmart weighs every bag so you can track your positive impact.
