Walking Together, Culture Connects

As part of Council's commitment to fostering cultural understanding and connection, Council commissioned a collaboration involving Irish, Scottish & First Nations heritage Bundjalung and Biripai artist Noni Cragg and Korean born artist Sophi Odling to bring together First Nations and CALD perspectives.

Through a series of consultations and a dedicated workshop, the artists were guided by D'harawal Elder Aunty Deb Lennis' cultural knowledge and insights, ensuring the designs respectfully represented shared themes across cultures.

The result is two banner artworks:

Walking Together features a snake and eel intertwine on a deep red background, a colour significant in both Aboriginal and many Asian cultures, symbolising unity, movement and cultural continuity. The design features native florals and a border inspired by traditional Asian tea boxes, both flowers and tea have health and cultural significance across both cultures and particularly around the rituals of drinking tea and sharing stories.

Culture Connects showcases an emu and crane stand together under the moon and stars, referencing the rich constellation and celestial stories present in both Aboriginal and CALD cultures, reminding viewers of our universal connections under the same sky.
