Local residents are being asked to vote for their favourite name as part of a competition to rename the lane behind Burwood Council and Library which runs between Wynne Avenue and Conder Street.

“We had a terrific response from the local community who came up with some fantastic suggestions to rename Hornsey Lane to help create a community connection to the precinct,” Mayor John Faker said.

“A special panel has chosen a shortlist of five names from all the entries and we are now asking local residents to vote for their favourite name.”

The five shortlisted names are:

  • Yellomundi An aboriginal word meaning "storyteller" in Darug, the dialect of the Eora Nation.
  • Bennelong Bennelong was the Aboriginal leader of the Wangal Clan who lived in Burwood.
  • Unity Representing shared values of community, respect and kindness.
  • Sarah Nelson The earliest recorded free settler in Burwood who arranged her own passage to Sydney in 1791.
  • Wei Lai Meaning 'the future' in Chinese.

Residents can vote for their favourite name by clicking here. Voting ends 21 February. Everyone who votes has the chance to win one of two $50 vouchers.

Mr Faker said the recently pedestrianised and landscaped lane will form part of the planned rejuvenation of the area which will create the potential for an emerging community and retail destination and become a space that represents the broad cultural identity of Burwood.
