Council’s commitment to moving towards a green future was unanimously endorsed at the recent Ordinary General Meeting where the Sustainable Burwood Plan was adopted.

The Plan is a result of extensive consultation conducted with community and key stakeholders over the last 12 months, breaking down a vision of a sustainable future into three key pillars.

These are:

  • Increasing open space and making our parks active spaces
  • Working towards net zero emissions for Council by 2030 and for the community by 2050 Increasing and enhancing green open space
  • Explore the possibilities in water recycling or harvesting.

The Plan outlines short term, medium term, and long term targets including planting a further 500 trees in 2022 on top of the 1200 trees already planted over the last 2 years. This will increase tree canopy cover across the LGA to 25%. Other targets include working toward reducing water usage, encouraging greater public transport use, and creating awareness about our climate and environment.

Mayor of Burwood Cr John Faker is heartened by the community support of the Plan and believes this is a foundational document that will define the next decade of Council.

“What quickly became obvious to us during the research and consultation period was that our residents cared about environmental issues and wanted us as a Council to become leaders within the community and Local Government sector.

“Already this year we’ve taken some giant leaps forward. We’re in the process of trialling a Food Organics and Garden Organic (FOGO) program to help reduce food wastage. We’ve also recently committed to making our facilities and street lighting run off 100% renewable energy in what was one of the largest deals ever made in the Local Government sector,” Cr Faker said.

“I would urge everyone in the community to jump on and support Council’s efforts to protect our environment so that that Burwood can continue to be a great place to live, work and play in,” he concluded.
