European Pastime Thriving At Croydon With New Court

Bocce Court

One of Europe’s quintessential ball games, bocce, and its community are thriving at Croydon after Burwood Council installed a synthetic court at Blair Park.

Devoted players meet regularly at the court – one of few in Sydney – to practise the sport more commonly seen in town squares and parks in Europe.

People have played bocce at Blair Park for many years, and Mayor John Faker said the new court would ensure they would continue to do so.
“The community asked me whether Council could provide a new court, and I was happy to help,” he said.

Clr Faker grew up in the area and has seen many people enjoy the court over the years.

“People have been playing bocce here for decades. It’s a great physical and social activity.

“We want to provide our residents with places to meet, and help them enjoy our beautiful parks.”

Bocce is similar to lawn bowls, but played on a narrow surface.

Players may throw or use underarm delivery to send their bowls closest to the jack.

Croydon resident Ivan Susic has been playing at Blair Park for almost 50 years.

He was happy to gain a level surface and will continue to meet his friends there.

“We come to play and have a laugh,” he said.
