A spike in COVID cases is causing distress for business owners across Burwood, with the memories of an enforced shutdown still at the forefront of their minds. Mayor John Faker believes that there is one simple solution that could give them peace of mind during this challenging time.

Earlier this week the NSW Government relaxed the wearing of masks in almost all indoor settings and Mayor Faker is calling on Burwood residents doing some last minute Christmas shopping to voluntarily wear masks while out and about.

“I believe that the Premier has made a mistake removing the restriction on masks indoors prematurely. People got used to it and it helped keep COVID numbers down in NSW,” Cr Faker said.

“While we all need to live with the virus we should also continue to take sensible steps to reduce the spread. The Government should bring back the mask restriction for indoor settings, but if it’s not to be, then I encourage Burwood residents to voluntarily wear them indoors.”

With large crowds flocking to retail outlets in the heart of our community such as Westfield Burwood and our high streets the Mayor feels the plight of business owners has been overlooked in the rush to ease restrictions.

“Small business owners are the heartblood of our community, creating jobs for locals and becoming ingrained in the fabric of our society. They have suffered so much during the COVID crisis,” Cr Faker said.

“So many owners are telling me they can’t afford to have their staff infected and have to shut down anymore. They want staff and customers to be safe, and the best and most practical way to do that is for people to wear masks and social distance.

“Let’s do everything in our power to protect our family, friends and small businesses who are all doing it tough. Wearing a mask will make shopping better for everyone,” he concluded.
