Burwood Cares Award

Two of Council’s most innovative programs of the last 12 months received state-wide recognition at the NSW Local Government Professionals Annual Awards ceremony in Sydney on Thursday.

The Burwood Print and Post Partnership: Transforming the Way Councils Issue Fines was Highly Commended in the Special Project Initiative – Councils with population under 100,000 category, while the Burwood Cares -  Four Phase Community Recovery and Resilience Program also received the High Commended Award in the Community Development Category.

The Post and Print Partnership saw Council partner with Revenue NSW in 2020 to streamline the way fines are issued to customers with the Burwood LGA spearheading a pilot project. Some of the key improvements from the program included improved customer experience, minimising workplace safety risks, and removing administration burdens. It also allowed staff to spend more time in the field during their daily work.

Our Burwood Cares Program was launched in March 2020 and was a direct response to the impact that the COVID-19 Pandemic was having on the community. It was four-pronged approach involving multiple departments of Council.

Its key aims included;

  • Inceased support for vulnerable residents
  • Provide support for struggling local businesses and industries especially the arts
  • Provision of timely, accessible, and targeted information for  the community

The program resulted in significant increase in engagement with the community and saw more than $1.1 million dollars committed to financial relief measures for residents and businesses.
