The Burwood Local Government Area will look a lot greener after Council’s commitment to planting an additional 500 trees.

Since the Mayoral Street Tree Program was inaugurated in 2019 more than 1200 trees have been planted in local streets and parks with Council aiming to achieve 25% tree canopy coverage by 2025.

The trees chosen are a mixture of native and exotic species that have been selected for their appropriateness to the Burwood area while serving the purpose of providing shade, a colourful streetscape, and increasing biodiversity in our community.

Mayor of Burwood Cr John Faker who is a passionate advocator and initiator of the program introduced a Mayoral Minute at Council’s Ordinary General Meeting on Tuesday night.

“The feedback from the community has been incredibly positive, and we continue to receive interest from residents wanting Council to include their street in the program, and I am especially pleased that our residents have umped on-board to support this program,” Cr Faker said.

“I have asked Council to continue to investigate further opportunities for locations to plant these 500 trees. It’s important that we make every effort to continue this program as it will help make Burwood a greener and more sustainable place to live, work, and play,” he concluded.
