Bee Kind - Bee Hotel Giveaway

World Bee Day is on 20 May 2024 and to celebrate Burwood Council is giving away 10 native bee hotels, made by students from Southern Cross Catholic College Burwood, to be hung in gardens, courtyards and apartment block garden areas to boost native bee numbers across the Burwood Council area.

Did you know there are 200 native bee species in Sydney? Native bees tend to be solitary and are important pollinators of our native plants. Australian native bees are also smaller than a European honeybee.

Bee populations around the world, including our native bees are in decline. The main reasons for this are widespread pesticide use, disease and habitat loss.

We can all contribute to help save our bees by:

  • Growing bee-friendly plants in your garden (blue and yellow flowers are loved by the native bees but they will search for pollen and nectar from any coloured flower)
  • Keeping a native bee hotel in your garden
  • Letting some herbs and vegetable plants go to flower

Bee Kind and enter our giveaway below. Forms are also available from Council’s Customer Services’ counter.

The giveaway closes Wednesday 15 May 2024 at 5pm.

Lucky residents who will be receiving a bee hotel will be notified and presented them on World Bee Day.

*Bunnings Ashfield kindly donated all timber and supplies to Southern Cross Catholic College Burwood for the construction of the bee hotels.
