A compulsory evacuation of women and children was announced in New Guinea on 12 December 1941, five days after the Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbour. Of the evacuees, 125 Chinese women and children from New Guinea were sent to find refuge in Burwood in 1942.
Raymond ‘Ray” Olsen a photographic reporter for The Sun (1942-1945) recorded the effects of the war, travelling within Australia and around the major war theatres around Asia. This exhibition is an example of his work, depicting the daily life of the women and children in their new home.
The exhibition can be viewed during opening hours and is located in the Hub at Burwood Library.
