Burwood residents are set to come together to pause, remember, and reflect on the sacrifices made by Australia’s armed forces next Monday with several moving commemorative events planned for Anzac Day.

For the first time since 2019 a full program of Remembrance Events is scheduled allowing the community to gather on 25 April without the limitations on crowd numbers imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Veterans will take part in the traditional march down Burwood Road from finishing at Memorial Arch before the dawn service commences at 6:30am.

Students from local schools will be involved with the ceremony with a key-note address to be delivered by Retired Colonel Professor Robert Lusby AM.

Following the service, a breakfast will be held at Burwood RSL before the morning’s proceedings conclude with an Anzac Day Mass at St Joseph’s Enfield from 9:15am.

Mayor John Faker said a return to the traditional Anzac Day offering several ways for the community to pay their respects is very much welcomed.

“Anzac Day is a significant day on our national calendar. It’s so important that we as a modern society pay homage to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for Australia and ultimately for us to live the lives we are so fortunate to do so today,” Cr Faker said.

“Coming Home is the theme the committee has assigned to this year’s commemorations. This is a powerful message because it honours not just those who didn’t make it home but those who returned physically, mentally and emotionally changed by their experiences.

“The Burwood community had a very close relationship to World War One and it’s our responsibility to know the stories and to pass them down through the generations so that the names of our forebears and their sacrifice will continue through time,” Cr Faker concluded.

Council will be providing a free shuttle service between the RSL Club and Burwood Park on Monday 25 April. Members of the community are warmly invited to attend any of the commemoration ceremonies.
