Inter-Library Lending

Interlibrary loans is a co-operative venture to help library users. Materials not held in the Burwood Library can be requested from other libraries for a small charge.

Speed of Service

We try to process all requests as efficiently as possible. Our aim is to achieve these in-house processing times for requests received:
  • Standard requests received with valid bibliographic information, (e.g. author, title and call number)
Location of item is identified and request sent to library - target response time is 48 hours.
  • Standard requests received with vague bibliographic information (vague title, incorrect spelling) or request for information not readily identified, which may require verification from the borrower
Location of item is not readily identified and request sent to library - target response time is 1 week (5 working days).
  • Fast track requests
Target response time is not more than 24 hours (1 working day)

Note that these are our in-house processing times and do not include delivery time to us from other libraries. All processing times for standard requests can alter with variations in request numbers and staff availability.

The only information we have is that which the borrower provides. The amount and accuracy of their information can make the difference in service response time.

Request for loans are normally made through Libraries Australia Document Delivery, otherwise the standard national interlibrary loan form is used. Phone requests must be confirmed through the above process.

What sort of material can be obtained via Inter-Library Loans?

Most material can be obtained on inter-library loans, however each lending library has their own policy regarding the lending of certain material.

Most public libraries will not lend out audiovisual items, e.g. videos, captioned videos (for the deaf), sound recordings, kits. These items can be requested from the State Library of NSW if it is available in their collection. The State Library of NSW also offers ESL material (English as a second language), literacy material, and foreign language material.

If an item is only available from a non-council library in NSW, interstate library or the National Library of Australia, there is an ACLIS charge for each book and article request. This charge is to be paid by the borrower and is subject to change.

In order to use this service, the borrower must be a member of the Library. The standard non-refundable interlibrary loan charge of $5.00 (incl. GST) must be paid up front, therefore, interlibrary loans requests cannot be taken over the phone.
