Name The Lane

Name the Lane

Local residents can make a permanent mark in history by renaming the lane behind Burwood Council and Burwood Library which runs between Wynne Avenue and Conder Street.

Originally named Conder Place, the name of the lane was changed to Hornsey, but Council has not found any historical, social or political significance for the name and Council meeting minutes were destroyed in 1894.

Things change over time and a street name can often lose its relevance and connection to its community or sense of place. That is why residents have a fabulous opportunity to make a permanent mark in history by renaming the lane to one which creates a community connection to the precinct.

Residents are being encouraged to visit the pedestrian mall and view the new sky-bridge and three new stunning murals for inspiration to Name the Lane based on the themes of Past, Present and Future.

Burwood is rich in history, heritage and culture emerging from the original custodians of the land, the Wangal people through to the culturally diverse community of today.

At present, the precinct around Hornsey Lane includes the heritage Council Chamber building, the updated library and customer service centre, the new state of the art community hub, and the sky bridge which literally connects the past to the future.

And in the future we want to create a vibrant, urban space for people to stroll, dine outside, see light shows and visit street markets.

The recently pedestrianised and landscaped lane will form part of the planned rejuvenation of the area which will create the potential for an emerging community and retail destination and become a space that represents the broad cultural identity of Burwood.

Everyone who enters the competition to Name the Lane will go into a draw to win one of five shopping vouchers each valued at $50.

The person who enters the winning name will receive a $300 voucher and will have the honour of cutting the ribbon at the official name day celebration. People can enter the competition online at Burwood.nsw.gov.au.

This project received funding through the Places to Love program for collaborative public space demonstration projects by the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment.
