It’s always nice to earn plaudits from your peers, and Council’s commitment to innovation has been rewarded at the 2022 Local Government Excellence Awards with recognition for three incredible projects.

Prior to the glitz and glamour of the awards ceremony, Council was notified that three projects had been selected as finalists.

These included “Achieving Cultural Harmony Through Public Art - A Precinct Transformation Project,” the Grant Park Multipurpose Courts and Car Park Extension Project for “Special Project Initiative”, and Burwood Bounce Back – Economic Reactivation and Resilience Building initiative for “Supporting Local Enterprise.”

There were cheers all round when Burwood Bounce Back was announced as the winner in its category. The Burwood Bounce Back program has brought local streets back to life post COVID-19 thanks to a raft of initiatives that supported the return of local business trade, outdoor dining, live music and entertainment.

The Program has also resulted in significant performance and process improvements including the adaptation of policies and processes to meet the changing needs of businesses as well as expedited and simplified application processes.

In addition to the three finalists, Council’s Governance Coordinator was recognised as Dux of the 2021 Governance In Local Government course.

Mayor John Faker was ecstatic with the results believing this recognition indicates that Burwood continues to be a leader in Local Government.

“The Local Government Excellence Awards are an opportunity to celebrate all of the hard work delivered by staff in the sector. Burwood can be rightly proud of our innovative programs and it’s wonderful to see it recognised.

“All three projects have all made vital contributions to our community in the last 12 months,” Cr Faker said.

“It’s a fantastic achievement to have a projects selected as the winner, particularly in the supporting local enterprise category at a time when businesses needed Council’s support more than ever. I congratulate all of the staff involved for their efforts,” he concluded.
