Burwood Council has teamed up with local supermarkets Coles Westfield Burwood and IGA Enfield in a collective effort to get vital food supplies to vulnerable residents across the LGA.

From this week shoppers at the two locations will be able to donate pantry items such as pastas, snacks, and long life milk, as well as essential toiletries including shampoo, toothpaste, and disposable razors into collection boxes.

The boxes will be collected by Access Sydney and distributed to four local charities - Burwood Community Welfare Services, St Merkorious, St Pauls Anglican Church and Saint Nectarious to be distributed to vulnerable members of the community as part of their regular charity work.

Speaking at the launch of the program on Monday, Mayor John Faker said it was crucial Council supported residents in a COVID safe way.

“Many members of our community are experiencing hardship during the pandemic whether it’s financial stress or having difficulty in budgeting essential items to help support their families,” said Cr Faker.

“Council has been inundated with messages from the community asking how they could help. It was a really positive response and shows how much our residents care about each other when tough times arise.

“Having a central location for collection means people can help in their own time and we’re not risking extra movement during the lockdown. I am delighted that Coles at Westfield Burwood and IGA at Enfield have partnered with us and I urge the community to support this initiative however they can,” he concluded.

Coles Regional Manager Michael Warner said Coles stores throughout Burwood were keen to play its part to help the community in these challenging times.

“We know how hard it’s been for everyone over the past few months, particularly for the most vulnerable members of our community.
“Our team members have been working extremely hard to provide support to those doing it tough through our ongoing food donations to SecondBite and the donation bins at Westfield is another way we can work better together to help even more people in the community get access to grocery and essential items,” Mr Warner said.

IGA Enfield owner Alex Kahla said it’s important to be able to support our community in its time of need.
“At IGA Enfield we support and care for our locals and community. We are proud to be a part of this great project,” Mr Kahla said.
