A focus on outdoor dining and entertainment, the waiving and relaxing of business fees, and the establishment of a dedicated taskforce are at the forefront of a Council plan to help Burwood’s business community bounce back from its winter of discontent.

With the end of lockdown looming Council endorsed a mayoral minute at last night’s Ordinary Meeting calling for an extended support package to help revitalise small business which is the lifeblood of the local economy.

Initiatives in the package include exploring the use of public spaces, Council car parks, and small lanes for outdoor dining, streamlining and fast-tracking the approval process for outdoor dining options for businesses, and the creation of small business grants and reducing rents for local shops.

Mayor John Faker said it’s important Council does everything in its power to support and stimulate local business.

“We know that the current stay at home order as well as the increased restrictions imposed on hotspot local government areas has impacted commercial and retail trade in Burwood,” said Cr Faker.

“Reactivating businesses is going to be a significant challenge. This is particularly true for the hospitality sector, whose reopening is contingent upon the creation of expanded COVID-safe options for outdoor dining.”

One other idea discussed at the meeting that is particularly exciting for the Mayor is the possibility of stimulating Burwood’s night-time economy.

“We’re searching for the support of the NSW Government to help launch the ‘Burwood After Dark’ pilot laneway activation program in an effort to enhance Burwood’s night time economy and activate streets as shared spaces.
“People’s shopping habits will likely change because of the Pandemic and we have a diverse range of shops within our city centre. Now is the time for innovation and if we can get people in our streets after dark and make sure it’s a fun place where you can take your family, especially as summer nears, then I believe it’s an option worth exploring,” Cr Faker concluded.

It is anticipated that this support package will commence in late October and continue until 31 January 2022.
