Burwood’s netball and basketball players are set to benefit from new sporting facilities in Grant Park.

Council has secured a $1 million grant from the Greater Sydney Sports Facility Fund which will contribute to an overall $2.46 million spend on building two new mixed-use outdoor netball/basketball courts and adjacent new carpark.

The courts will have reversible poles and line marking and will also be suitable for other sports including volleyball. Floodlighting will be installed for night training, as well as bike racks, drinking fountain, bench seats, shelters and more tree planting to shade spectators.

“Our netball and basketball teams will be able to play their sport locally – and I’m sure other members of the community will enjoy heading to Grant Park to shoot a few hoops after school and on the weekend too’’ said Mayor Faker.

“This project is part of Council’s commitment to ensuring our community has access to the best possible exercise facilities. It is a welcome addition to what has become a sports and fitness precinct with a further $7.4 million earmarked for upgrades and new projects over the next year.”

Netball is one of the most popular team sports played in Australia for young girls and women. A survey of Burwood’s parks and recreational facilities found that there were many more male oriented sporting activities available.

“We were keen to correct that imbalance,” said the Mayor said.

Work on the courts is expected to start later this year and be completed by mid-2021.
