Burwood Council has planted 15 new indigenous trees in Wangal Park as part of its 500 Trees Program.

The park’s management program has a theme of indigenous trees, so the five Illawarra Flame Trees and 10 flowering gums have been chosen.

So far, 275 trees have been planted in streets around the area.

Mayor John Faker said both species had brilliant crimson flowers that would create a brilliant effect around the park in spring and summer.

“We’ve chosen established trees so our community will be able to enjoy their beautiful blooms as soon as possible,” he said.

“One of my priorities as Mayor is to beautify our streets by increasing the tree canopy cover over Burwood.

“This program will provide, over the coming years, an urban tree canopy that will not only beautify our streets but also contribute to the reduction of the overall temperature on our streets, footpaths and shared public areas.”

The 500 Trees Program will help with carbon sequestration as well as protect the homes of native animals including birds, mammals and reptiles.
