Programs/Activities for Seniors

Burwood Seniors Social Group

This is an informal group for seniors who live in the Burwood Local Government Area (LGA) and surrounding suburbs initiated by Burwood Council since 2005.  It provides a variety of activities for seniors usually on a monthly basis which may include information talks on aged related topics that are of interest to seniors; occasional bus trips to interesting places around Sydney and many more including the annual Seniors Festival program.

The primary purpose of this initiative is to draw out or motivate seniors (60 years and over) who live alone and may be experiencing social isolation to participate and interact with other seniors or simply learn new things or learn new information that can be useful to them. Often joining this group has resulted in finding new friendships and/or new hobbies/adventures such as joining Council's Community Programs as shown below.

For more information please click here or contact Council's Aged & Disability Officer on 9911 9858.  Information brochures are available quarterly.

Disability Program

There have been major changes in the Disability Sector. All State Government functions and programs have been rolled out to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).  Due to these changes the Disability Guide that has been previously compiled by Burwood Council has now been removed from the web page.  Please contact NDIS through St Vincent De Paul Society on 1800 794 934 or email LAC@vinnies.org.au.  Vinnies is the Local Area Coordination (LAC) agency to transit people with a disability into the NDIS that covers the Burwood LGA.  Otherwise, please feel free to contact Burwood Council's Aged and Disability Officer on 9911 9858 for all other enquiries related to disability.

Disability Inclusion Action Plan

Burwood Council is committed to creating a more inclusive community for all people. The Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) will ensure that the goal of a more inclusive community is attained.

The main objective of the DIAP is to ensure that people with a disability have an opportunity to fully participate in the social, community and business life of Burwood. The plan outlines key strategies and actions that will assist in overcoming barriers to inclusion. These strategies will be incorporated into Council's planning for the next four years.

The DIAP has been developed based on these areas:
• Developing positive community attitudes and behaviours towards people with a disability
• Creating more live-able communities for people with a disability
• Achieving a higher rate of meaningful employment participation by people with a disability through inclusive employment practices
• Ensuring more equitable access to mainstream services for people with a disability through better systems and processes
