The story of Burwood goes back to the very first years of the convict colony. Governor Phillip’s settlement was mainly clustered around Sydney Cove, but he also founded a small farming community at Parramatta, or ‘Rose Hill’, as it was called then. Communication between the two settlements was essential, so a rough bush track was established through heavily timbered country. The track, in 1791, more or less followed what is now Parramatta Road.
