Permission to Remove or Prune a Tree
Council has powers for the protection or preservation of trees in the Burwood Local Government Area through the State Environmental Planning Policy (Vegetation in Non-Rural Areas) 2017 and the Burwood Development Control Plan (BDCP).
A development consent or a tree permit granted by Council is required before removal or pruning of a tree that has a height equal to or exceeding 4m, or a branch spread equal to or exceeding 2m, or a trunk diameter exceeding 150mm measured at a distance 1.4m above the ground. The BDCP provides for specific exemptions to this requirement.
A person who contravenes or causes to be contravened the requirements of the BDCP for the preservation of trees shall be guilty of an offence.

Burwood Council’s Street Tree Management Strategy has been reviewed, and the revised Strategy was adopted by Council on 18 November 2013. The essence of the original Strategy in response to the community consultation has been retained, with technical and arboricultural industry best practice information updated. The Strategy provides a framework for the management of street trees within the Burwood Local Government Area. The previous Street Tree Management Strategy and Tree Vandalism Zero Tolerance Policy are superseded by this document.
