Burwood has a diverse range of business from large shopping centres to smaller family run ventures. All of these businesses enhance the community by providing outstanding services close to home and by generating revenue and employment opportunities in the area. Key employment sectors include retail, property and business services, health, and education.

Burwood features two major shopping precincts - the Burwood Town Centre and Westfield Burwood Shopping Centre, with a smaller centre at Burwood Plaza. The Council area has three private hospitals - Alwyn Rehabilitation Hospital, Strathfield Private Hospital and St John of God Hospital. Several training colleges (theological, missionary and nursing) are located in the area, with a number of private and public schools.

Burwood Council strongly supports local businesses through information, education and other initiatives.
