The theme for June is 'Memory and Amnesia'.  The film industry has a fascination with memory and amnesia and how this impacts of peoples lives.  In the movie’ Memento’(2000), a man is suffering from short term memory loss and uses notes and tattoos to hunt for the man he thinks killed his wife. In the movie ‘Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind’, (2004), A couple undergo a procedure to erase each other from their memories when their relationship turns sour, but this is only through the process of loss that they discover what they had to begin with.  Come and join in the discussion.

Friday, 1 June – 6.00pm to 7.30pm.

July

The theme for July is ‘Drama in a courtroom’.  The criminal justice system has long served as a stage for society’s most dramatic conflicts.  The courtroom drama is a prominent film genre in Hollywood.  What these dramas have in common is that the essential part of their story takes place in a courtroom as it is like a theatre plenty of space for an audience.  The films of discussion will be ‘A time to kill’ (1996), based on a John Grisham novel and ‘Witness for the prosecution’ (1957) a tale of a man on trial for murder featuring surprise after surprise in the courtroom.

Friday, 6th July – 6.00pm to 7.30pm

August

Come to the movie club discussion and spice up your August with fables, fairytales and fantasies of one of Hollywood’s most unique visionaries, director and filmmaker, TimBurton.  He takes inspiration from popular culture, reinventing Hollywood genre filmmaking as an expression of personal vision.  Come and venture into the world of ‘Edward Scissor hands’ (1990).  Take a walk with Victor, a young man whisked into the underworld and wed to a mysterious ‘Corpse bride’, (2005).

Friday, 3rd – 6.00pm to 7.30pm

September

The theme for September is ‘Shakespeare on screen’.

Some shall be pardoned and some punished.  For never was, a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo”, Prince, Romeo and Juliet, Act V, Scene iii.

William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, (1996) version of the famous play is updated to the hip modern suburb of Verona still maintaining the original dialogue.  The gun toting members of the families wage a vicious war on the streets as the star crossed lovers are destined for a tragic end.  West Side Story (1961), is a musical, energetic, widely acclaimed melodramatic modern day, lose retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, two young people from rival NYC gangs who fall in love.
